At Equalise: ESRC Centre for Lifecourse Health Equity (Equalise), we are committed to protecting your personal information and being transparent about what we do with it. We comply with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) regarding the collection, processing, storage and disclosure of personal information.

What our privacy policy covers:

  • How we will use any data that you share with us when you visit or complete any forms on the Equalise website, sign up to Equalise newsletters, or contact Equalise on social media.
  • How we will protect that information.
  • How you can contact us to tell us not to use your information in any of the ways described in the policy.

We are legally required to tell you how we will use this information and give you the opportunity to tell us not to use your information in that way.

Who we are

Equalise is the ESRC Centre for Lifecourse Health Equity. Our mission is to produce and disseminate multi-disciplinary research tackling and reducing health inequities from a lifecourse perspective, providing evidence-based solutions for policy makers

Any references to ‘we’, ‘us’ or ‘our’ in this privacy policy refer to Equalise. We are based at the UCL’s Research Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London (UCL). Our office address is 1-19 Torrington Place, London WC1E 7HB and you can email us at equalise@ucl.ac.uk.

In relation to any data that you provide us, we are known as the ‘data controller’.

The data we collect

Data we collect when you use our website

When you visit our website we collect data that is obtained from cookies. We only collect and use information using cookies if you accept these cookies. You can find information on how we collect and use cookies on our cookies policy.

Data we collect when you sign up to receive Equalise newsletters

When you sign up to receive our newsletter, you will be asked to provide:

  • your first name
  • last name
  • email address
  • organisation

You will also be asked to provide your consent for us to store and use your data as detailed below.

This information is collected via an online sign up page hosted on our website and connected to a third party, currently Mailchimp. We manage our newsletter through Mailchimp. The above-listed data will be shared with MailChimp. You can read more about Mailchimp’s privacy policy on its website. We will retain this data for as long as we continue to provide newsletters or until you withdraw your consent.

Every newsletter we send includes an option for you to unsubscribe from future notifications or update your newsletter preferences and contact details. There is no obligation for you to provide a reason for unsubscribing to our mailing list.

We collect this information on the lawful basis of consent. If you wish to withdraw consent, simply unsubscribe using the link provided in the newsletter.

Data we collect when you contact us on social media

  • handle or username
  • name
  • location
  • photograph(s)
  • email address

We may collect some of the above information when you contact us through social media platforms in order to:

  • Respond to your post/enquiry;
  • Share your post on our social media accounts.

Where we are sharing your post on our official accounts (sharing, re-posting, etc.), we will do so in our legitimate interest to promote lifecourse health equity studies and general content of interest to the health equity and equality research and third-sector community.

Who your personal information will be shared with

Your trust and privacy are very important to us. We will never sell or give your personal information to any other organisations.

We do not provide any personal information about users of our website to third parties or other users, unless we are under a duty to disclose or share your personal data in order to comply with any legal obligation, or in order to enforce or apply our terms of use and other agreements; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Equalise, or others.

The accuracy of your information is important to us. If you change your address or believe any of the other information we hold concerning you is out of date, please email equalise@ucl.ac.uk.

Your data protection rights

Under data protection law, you have rights including:

  • Your right of access – You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information.
  • Your right to rectification – You have the right to ask us to rectify personal information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete.
  • Your right to erasure – You have the right to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances.
  • Your right to restriction of processing – You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.
  • Your right to object to processing – You have the right to object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.
  • Your right to data portability – You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances.

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you.
